Living in this city provides an individual with many unique opportunities, such as weekly trips to the beautiful beaches, or dining at restaurants that specialize in local cuisine. Honolulu is the epicenter of busy life on the island and is considered the business and population center of Hawaii. Honolulu housing options vary in prices and appearances but make wonderful homes for any adventurous individual. The city of Honolulu has one district that is world renowned for its’ iconic beaches backed by tall palm trees and home to many luxury high-rise hotels – Waikiki, a neighborhood is famous all around the world as a glimpse of life in modern Hawaii.

Overview

Honolulu’s name comes from the native Hawaiian language. Specifically, the words “hono,” which means “protected or sheltered” and “lulu,” which means “bay.” The geography of the land is split between beaches and areas covered with mountainous terrain. Honolulu is defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as the area from Makapuu south of the Koolau Mountain range summit to the western edge of Halawa Valley. According to the 2010 Census, more than 340,000 individuals call this residential area their home.

Honolulu is considered one of the most beautiful and pleasant vacation spots on the planet and over the decades has become a large area of interest for foreign tourism. Foreign tourism is the state’s largest industry and supporter of the economy. The city’s climate is a desirable one with a year round average temperature range of a warm 72F to around 82F. Honolulu is located on the edge of an extinct volcano known as Diamond Head.

History

Hawaii’s early history was filled with conflicts and turbulence. It was among the last areas in the world to be explored by Europeans (first visited in 1778 by Captain James Cook). Hawaii experienced strong pressures from different forces, such as the American missionaries, that came in 1820, and the opportunistic whalers. The whalers were part of those who originally built the founding city of Honolulu. They brought trade prosperity and commerce that expanded and become the pineapple and sugar industry which would lead the economy of Hawaii for decades. In 1898, the process of a legal merging of Hawaii as a territory of the United States began. In 1959, Hawaii gained its’ statehood as well as the availability of commercial air travel which allowed others to view remarkable beauty of Honolulu. As of now the city of Honolulu thrives as a economic center for commerce and tourism all while providing activities and

Activities

Starting from Waikiki, there are lots of activities to partake in. Guests can take surfing lessons on the famous Waikiki beach, shop on the main strips of Kuhio and Kalakaua or even go to a luau. They can also visit some historic locations in Downtown Honolulu, which include the King Kamehameha statue, Iolani Palace, and Kawaiahao Church. The Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in all of the United States. Kawaiahao Church is a church built in 1842 out of coral brick by missionaries, it is one of the oldest standing Christian places of worship in Hawaiʻi.

Individuals also have their choices of numerous outdoor activities such as hiking Diamond Head, Manoa Falls, snorkeling at Hanauuma Bay, swimming at Ala Moana Beach Park. The city of Honolulu also has many museums worth checking out such as the Honolulu Museum of Art famous for their large collection of Asian art, the Bishop Museum known for their studies in Polynesia, and the Pacific Aviation Museum which has exhibits about WWII aviation in the Pacific. Another place of interest is Ala Moana Center which is a multi-level outdoor shopping mall. The largest open air shopping center in all of America, this mall is consistently ranked among the top 10 of the country’s most successful malls. Whether your ideal day is one out shopping or one out facing the waves, Honolulu has it all. The city provides endless activities for residents and tourists alike.

Honolulu, from the white sandy beaches and palm trees to the bustling streets and high rises of Waikiki, this city truly is a place of paradise.
