Kapolei: Oahu’s Fastest Growing City

 

Kapolei is a master-planned community located on the leeward coast on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.  It is commonly known as the “second city of Oahu” due to its recent exponential growth in its population, job opportunities, and housing options. The Kapolei offers larger and more affordable homes as compared to those homes available in the Honolulu area. 

 

Some communities in the Kapolei area include Makakilo, the Campbell Industrial Park, Barbers Point Harbor and Naval Air Station, and the resort and marina community of Ko ‘Olina. 

 

The area formerly existed as pineapple and sugarcane fields and over the course of the years, it has been drastically transformed into a thriving residential community. As of 2016, more than 100,000 individuals call this community their home.

 

History

 

The community takes its name from Pu’u o Kapolei, a volcanic cone. In Hawaiian, pu’u means “hill” and Kapo lei means “beloved Kapo”.  Kapo was the Hawaiian goddess of hula, fertility and sorcery.  Pu’u o Kapolei, is an actual hill located in Kapolei Regional Park and supposedly during the time of the winter solstice the setting sun would create a glowing wreath of light, forming what the Ancient Hawaiians saw as a celestial lei.

 

In 1877, James Campbell, a twenty-four year old Irish carpenter purchased a 41,000 acre plot of barren land on the Ewa plain in Oahu. This land would go on to become the city of Kapolei. He had a plan and was able to transform the desert-like area into miles and miles of sugar plantation and pineapple fields.  It’s hard to believe looking at the current success of the city that less than thirty years ago there was nothing there other than crops.  Mr. Campbell made a fortune in the sugar industry, buying land on several of the other Hawaiian islands. He went on to become one of the Pacific’s successful business tycoons, before his death in 1900.  In his will, it read that his assets were to be administered for the the benefit of his heirs which launched a plan into motion that would transform the Ewa Plain into an urban economic center.

 

Activities

 

There is a variety of numerous fun activities available to both tourists and residents of Kapolei.  Certainly one of the more popular activities would be Wet ‘n Wild Hawaii, which is a large (twenty-nine acres to be exact) tropical waterslide park. The park features more than twenty-five different attractions, and is an ideal place to spend those long hot summer days.  There are also many inexpensive nature and wildlife tours that are available most days of the week and will allow you to see the most truly breathtaking destinations on the island.  Another cool activity for possibly a lazy afternoon is visiting Ko ‘Olina beach park, which is a public park and if you wish you can go swimming in one of the four picturesque Ko ‘Olina lagoons. No matter your age or interests, there’s something for everyone in Kapolei.

 

 

Real Estate Specific

 

Kapolei is such a unique community to live in on Oahu…..Simply put, I believe it is affordability that separates Kapolei from other communities on the island……You get more house and land for your dollar in Kapolei than in most other areas of Oahu and still have the opportunity to enjoy the specific opportunities provided in urban living such as convenience and variety.  Most single-family homes in the Kapolei area in 2016 have sold in a price range of $550,000 to $725,000 while most condos/townhomes have sold in a price range of $350,000 to $550,000.  All currently available properties for sale in the Kapolei area are listed below for your review and consideration.
